Artist Statement
This body of work has been inspired by a particular family photograph, a simple snapshot of Irish rural life in the 1970’s. It illustrates an uncomplicated lifestyle, nostalgic and almost iconic in its presentation of a kitchen scene. The table is set with a variety of everyday condiments and tableware, placed at the centre, all at arm’s reach from the kettle to the jam. Oilcloth offers a strangely feminine touch in an otherwise basic arrangement.
I have used this photograph as a source for a series of silhouettes representing various items from the table. These graphics have been incorporated with embossed silver to create a series of brooches. The oil-cloth itself is represented both in the pattern used to emboss the silver and as a material enclosed within the frame of the brooch. The results are both colourful and nostalgic, homage’s to a bygone era.
