Artist Statement
I am intrigued by the forms and colours, which occur in
nature. The initial inspiration for this body of work was the fruit
of the Fraxinus Excelsior, otherwise known as the Common
Ash. The process of design development involved the
photographing, painting and drawing of various plants,
seeds, pods etc. Subsequently, I created a series of models
for jewellery based on a variety of simple forms.
The colours I employ are derived from, and an interpretation
of those found in nature. The vibrant use of colour illustrates
the synthesis of my two passions, jewellery and painting.
I am particularly inspired by ethnic jewellery; in particular
work from Africa and Tibet. I feel there is a visual relationship
between the strong simple forms typical of these genres and
my own jewellery forms.
This collection includes a selection of neckpieces, pendants,
brooches and bracelets, each an abstract interpretation of
the plants I have been studying.
I have chosen materials for visual and sensual impact,
combining hand-made 100% wool felt and silver. Felt offers
infinite possibilities for developing form whilst the nature of
the material allows me to utilize a myriad of colour and
tones. Geometric silver units punctuate the larger felt pieces,
accentuating their organic texture.
This jewellery presents a unique reflection of nature whilst
keeping pace with contemporary practice.
