Artist Statement
I am fascinated by the anonymous graffiti art found in the streets. The art is mostly expressive graffiti writing, and it is the inherent graphic qualities of this calligraphy which interests me. I am intrigued by the chaotic layered landscapes, created as a result of the graffiti writers magnetic impulses. I have developed my own style of graffiti writing which I have used here in my work. The process of design development involved digitally manipulating my initial artwork, transforming the results into CAD drawings and using these to cut the planar patterns from sheet metal by the chemical milling process. I have also used stencil-etching to apply pattern to my work.
I am also influenced by the Oriental aesthetic and this directed my choice of simple forms and my treatment of the materials which I have chosen (stainless steel, exotic wood, and silver), to produce a series of unique tableware pieces and vessels. These materials where chosen for their reflective and visual impact, emulating the strength and energy of the original “tag” writing.
